Since her graduation from Design Academy Eindhoven in 2008, Grietje Schepers set up her independent design practice. She creates large scale interior-defining installations from her studio in Eindhoven.

Expanding simple concepts into big gestures, Schepers is not afraid to take on a large space. This is strengthened by her experiments with proportion and scale. With ease in making a space feel informal and light, her architectural installations create impact with an interplay of colour and spaciousness.

By combining well-known materials with novel production techniques, Schepers playfully confuses our senses. With her experiential installations, she strives for a dialogue between object and user.

Working from her studio, she creates all prototypes by hand, and collaborates with a close-knit group of manufacturers to create custom editions. For materials she opts for natural felts, thrifted metals or she upgrades abundantly available materials to an unmatched experience. Furthermore, she works on commissions that span the fields of concepts, exhibitions and interior.

Schepers’ sensorial objects encourage a sense of wonder in the way we experience our surroundings. Pairing colour and form, her bold pieces capture moments of light and movement.

Sleeping Gold, Ellipt and Crawling are the first three projects in the collection of editions. The objects are well adjusted to the project market, and can liven up any new built or existing structure.

Ellipt

A range of fantastical light installations establishes a relationship with the space it inhabits. The light installation alters the sensory perception of a space and invites viewers to perceive the space differently. The geometrically intricate shapes are paired with an uplifting color palette, thereby enhancing any space with a mesmerizing pattern of light.
In addition to Ellipt’s visual appeal, the choice for felt makes the installations durable and the material and open shape give the objects sound-dampening qualities. As such, the installations are ideal for large spaces that need acoustic treatment.

Sleeping

When the gold starts to breathe, as if its lungs inflate and deflate, our senses are thrown into overdrive as we try to understand the living heap. This supposedly inanimate object gets passers-by to pause in wonder… The golden being becomes our friendly companion; it transforms an empty space to a shared one.
Where technology supposedly dehumanizes our environment, in Sleeping Gold it has quite the opposite effect.

Crawling

The Crawling objects capture your attention with their insect-like composure. The creatures seem to come towards you, while they are obviously too heavy to walk. Schepers is not one to waste material, therefore the materials for Crawling series have mainly been thrifted. Using reclaimed metals collected from the junkyard, the metal chains are welded together to form the shapes, thereby transforming the discarded materials into a series of iconic furniture pieces.

Commissions

Besides the editions, Grietje has worked (and continues to work) as a designer for industrial and cultural clients. She mainly focuses on interior defining scenes.
